5 Signs Your Posture Is Causing Your Pain (And What to Do About It)

Most people assume their chronic pain is just part of getting older. "My back always hurts." "My knees have been bad for years." "I just have bad hips." These statements are so common they've become accepted as normal — but they're not.

Chronic pain is rarely random. In the vast majority of cases, there's a structural reason your body hurts, and that reason is postural misalignment. Your skeleton has drifted from its ideal position, and the resulting stress on your joints, muscles, and connective tissue is what you're feeling as pain.

Here are five signs that your posture — not your age, not bad luck — is the root of your discomfort.

1. Your Pain Moves Around

One week your lower back is screaming. The next, it's your hip. Then your knee starts acting up. You treat one area and another flares.

This is one of the clearest signs of a systemic postural problem. When your skeleton is misaligned, your body compensates — shifting load from one joint to another, recruiting muscles that weren't designed for that job, and creating a cascade of stress throughout the kinetic chain.

Treating each pain site individually is like playing whack-a-mole. The Egoscue Method addresses the underlying misalignment that's driving the whole pattern.

2. One Side of Your Body Is Tighter Than the Other

Stand up and notice: does one hip feel tighter? Is one shoulder higher? When you fold forward, does one side of your back feel more restricted?

Asymmetry is a hallmark of postural dysfunction. Your body should be roughly symmetrical — equal strength, equal flexibility, equal range of motion on both sides. When one side is consistently tighter or weaker, it means your pelvis, spine, or shoulder girdle has rotated or tilted, creating uneven tension throughout your musculature.

This asymmetry doesn't just cause discomfort — it accelerates wear and tear on the joints that are bearing more than their share of the load.

3. Your Pain Is Worse After Sitting

If you feel stiff and achy after sitting at a desk, in a car, or on a couch, your posture is almost certainly a factor. Prolonged sitting in a misaligned position compresses the lumbar spine, shortens the hip flexors, and switches off the glutes — a combination that puts enormous stress on the lower back and hips.

Many people notice their pain is worst first thing in the morning or after long periods of inactivity. This is your body's way of telling you that the position you've been holding has loaded your joints unevenly.

The good news: this kind of pain responds exceptionally well to postural alignment work.

4. You've Had the Same Injury More Than Once

Recurring injuries — the same ankle sprain, the same pulled hamstring, the same shoulder strain — are a strong signal that something structural is setting you up for failure.

When your body is properly aligned, forces are distributed evenly across your joints and muscles. When it's not, certain areas become chronically overloaded and vulnerable. You may "heal" from an injury, but if the underlying misalignment isn't corrected, you'll keep returning to the same weak point.

If you've had the same injury two or more times, it's worth looking at your posture as the underlying cause.

5. Exercise Makes Your Pain Worse (or Doesn't Help)

Exercise is supposed to make you feel better. If you're working out regularly but still dealing with chronic pain — or if exercise consistently aggravates your symptoms — your body is trying to tell you something.

When you exercise with postural misalignment, you're often reinforcing dysfunctional movement patterns and loading already-stressed joints. Running with a rotated pelvis doesn't fix the rotation — it compounds it. Lifting weights with an imbalanced shoulder girdle doesn't build balanced strength — it builds imbalanced strength.

Postural alignment work creates the foundation that makes exercise safe, effective, and pain-free.

What You Can Do

If any of these signs resonate with you, the first step is a postural assessment. A trained eye can identify where your skeleton has drifted from its ideal position and design a personalized program to bring it back into balance.

The process takes time and consistency — your body didn't get misaligned overnight, and it won't realign overnight either. But the results are lasting, because we're addressing the root cause rather than managing symptoms.

You don't have to accept pain as your normal. Reach out today and let's take a look at what's really going on in your body.
